I love to quaff a gin. I really do. The Army and Navy is a CLASSIC gin cocktail dating back to around 1948 (possibly beyond) and is mentioned in David Embury’s The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks (a beloved text from times gone by).
Having made my own orgeat, I wanted to try out a classic and sophisticated cocktail to use it in (unlike my obtuse but fun avocolada!) I adjusted the original formula slightly and added a dash of cherry jam in place of a maraschino cherry garnish. That is the great thing about cocktails; you can play around!
Chill your glass, grab your cocktail shaker and let's have some fun!
Recipe
2 oz gin (I used Caorunn)
1 oz lemon juice
1 oz orgeat syrup
A barspoon of cherry jam (optional)
A dash of Angostura Bitters
Ice
Method
Place all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously.
Fine strain into an elegant, pre-chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with a dehydrated citrus wheel (or the traditional maraschino cherry)
Watch Me Shake It
I made a video that includes this recipe. First I show you how to make the orgeat, then the Army & Navy. Enjoy!
